 Historic La Conner WA

La Conner was founded in the early 1860's and is the oldest town in Skagit County.
First settled by non-natives just after the Civil War, early arrival and merchant John Conner renamed "Swinomish" after his wife, Louise A. Conner around 1876. La Conner soon became a popular farm community and hub for the steamers carrying passengers and freight from Seattle.
Logging and fishing prospered until the Depression closed down many businesses.
Artists settled in the area since the 1940's, enjoying the unique light and inspiration from nature and by the 1970's tourists discovered the area too, along with folks seeking the peace and quiet of an old fashioned town.
Today La Conner is a balance of families who work and live here, the Swinomish people across the channel and an influx of visitors enjoying all the seasons of the unique small town. It is the logical destination for the city dweller or the traveler who needs a place to relax for awhile, maybe browse through some interesting shops, many art galleries, talk to the locals, watch the waterfront activity, sample one of La Conner's fine restaurants and enjoy a variety of accommodations.
The fertile farmland continues to produce food and seed crops and the famous tulip and daffodil bulbs, and specialty nurseries provide material for landscapers and gardeners all over the Northwest.
The nineties have seen the arrival of the new and highly respected Museum of Northwest Art and the creation of Maple Center, a community hall for performances, town meetings and the enjoyment of all.
La Conner is on the National Register of Historic places and the County Historical Museum located in town is full of treasures belonging to many original town residents.
La Conner values its history and heritage as it looks ahead with anticipation to the millennium.

 Beautiful Scenic Chuckanut Drive

Just north of Whispering Firs Bed and Breakfast is the beautiful Chuckanut Drive. This was the first road in Washington state to be built exclusively as a scenic route. Chuckanut Drive takes you through gorgeous farmlands, in and out of the towns of Allen & Bow, with some of the area's best Restaurants, and Antique & Art Galleries.
The beautiful Chuckanut area - found south of the handsome historic Fairhaven community in Bellingham and north of the tranquil farmlands of Bow in the Skagit Valley - is home to some of the finest restaurants available to travelers anywhere. As you drive, winding your way high above Samish Bay through coastal forests, clinging to the side of Chuckanut Mountain, enjoy the views out over the water of the San Juan Islands and Rosario Strait.
Treat yourself along the 10-mile wonder and stop for an excellent dining experience and even accomodations at one of our featured establishments. Explore the shorelines and tidepools, fish and hike at beautiful Larrabee State Park nearby, with almost 2000 wooded acres and 3600 feet of shoreline on Samish Bay. Then, when you must leave, easily rejoin I-5 and continue to your destination north or south.
 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival
